Renting a car is something that a lot of us will probably have to do at some stage or other in our lives. It could be the case that we are on holiday in a foreign country and would benefit from having access to a car. Perhaps we just need something short term and it wouldn't be cost effective to lease or buy.

- Try to avoid renting cars from airports as you will tend to pay more here. You will probably find a cheaper car rental place just outside the airport. However you need to decide whether or not the savings that you make will make the effort of going elsewhere worthwhile. Sometimes you might also have to travel quite far to find another rental office.

- Make sure you are completely familiar with the terms and conditions of the agreement so that you are not facing hidden costs. You might have to pay to fill up the car before you give it back and this could work out quite expensive. You will also have to be on the lookout for other costs or taxes that you did not know about when you were given the original price.

- Don't buy expensive insurance that is unnecessary. Some of these car rental places make more money flogging unneeded insurance then they do from the cars they rent.

- Make sure you have a good look at the cars on offer and choose something small, safe, and fuel efficient. Check out for any promotions and you may be able to get a very reasonably priced vehicle. But any savings that you make on the price of the car rental will be lost if you choose a car that guzzles petrol.
